CONTINUOUS & COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION

Assessment is an integral part of learning and teaching. It can be diagnostic, formative summative. It helps in creating reflective students and teachers. Assessment can be used as a feedback to modify teaching and learning process. It values both process and product, includes academic and social outcomes and generic skills. It is a balance between the undesirable extremes of daily and annual assessment. It allows teachers the flexibility to meet the demand of CCE. CCE provides motivation and opportunities for students to reflect on their work, develop strategies for improvement and demonstrate improvement before SA.

*It makes time management demands on teachers and students; it can lead to over assessment and can create tensions between FA and SA.If trs.balances the combination of internal/formative/authentic assessment the change will be long lasting. An educational aim, understanding of learners, the nature of school as a social organization can help us to modify classroom practices.

*The evaluation should include both scholastic and co-scholastic areas which is comprehensive in nature. 2. Teachers must use variety of ways to collect info about the learning process. 3. Collect continuous info.4.see how a learner respond and how much time he takes to do so. 5. Report on continuous basis. 6. Provide feedback to the learner to lead a positive action and help learner to do better.

*Aims of assessment—knowledge, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating and creating. It helps teacher to organize effective teaching strategies, in regular assessment, to decide whether a class needs a discussion again or a few individual are in need of remedial instruction, to motivate children to develop good study habits, to make decision on future, to provide progress of students in scholastic and co-scholastic areas, identify areas of aptitude and interest.

Scholastic—SA,FA-April to September/Oct to March-9 point scale(each term will have 2FA and SA) Overall grade of FA and SA will be given.

FA is a tool used by the teacher to continuously monitor student progress in a non threatening, supportive environment. It can improve student’s performance while raising the self esteem of a child.

SA is carried out at the end of a course of learning to see how much a student has learned from the course. It is the most traditional way of evaluating student work.

CO-SCHOLASTIC-Behavior related to learners life skills, attitudes, interests, values, CCA activities and physical health.-5 point scale. ( 3A- assessment will be on anyone on any 2 activities from 4 clubs,3B-assessment will be done on any 2 activities from any 8)

ASSESSMENT PARADIGAMS
1. Assessment of learning- Tr.designs learning collects evidence, judges what is learnt.
2. Assessment for learning- Teacterdesigns learning, designs assessment with feedback, judges what has been learnt.
3. Assessment as learning- Teacher and student co-construct learning, co-construct assessment and co-construct learning progress map
4. Assessment in learning- Student as the centre of learning, student monitors, assesses and reflects on learning, teacher is a coach and mentor.

SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATION FOR FA
1. Only 1 paper pencil test
2. Assessment on quizzes, assignments, debates, group discussion, project *all activities must be done as group activities in a class and school time only.
Languages-some assessment should be for assessing conversation skill Math-Some FA tasks should be based on Math’s Lab Activities
Science-Some FA assessment should be based on Experiments and hands on activities.
S.St-Some assessment should be on projects done as group activities in a class.

SPECIFIC PERFOMA FOR CO-SCHOLASTIC ACTIVITIES
1. Life skills-Assessment will be on the basis of their overt behavior- Day to day observation
Rating per term
Testing annually
2. Maximum score- No. of behavior descriptors x score/No. of descriptors
Life skill-25 marks (5 x5/5)
Work education-50 marks (10 x5/5)
Visual and performing arts edu., Attitudes-(10 x 5/5)
Values-200marks (10 x4 x5 /10x40)
CCA-50 marks (10 x 5/5)
Health and PE-50 marks (10x5/10)
*Before assigning the grades teacher needs to calculate the average or grade points by dividing the total score obtained by a student by number items in the in that component.
3. HPE-Assessment on the basis of
1. Basic understanding about health
2. Physical fitness
3. Attitude development
4. Participation in Health and Wellness club activities.

TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES OF EVALUATION
Aim is to provide development feedback to the learner and to grade the learner on the basis of learning outcome against the set of norms.
TOOLS           TECHNIQUES
1. Questions          1. Examination
2. Observation          2. Assignments
3. Test and Inventories           3. Quizzes and competitions
4. Checklist           4. Projects
5. Rating scale          5. Debates
6. Anecdotal records           6. Elocution
7. Document analysis          7. Group discussions
8. Portfolio           8. Club activities
9. Experiments
10. Research
1. Questions-Essay, short answer, very short answer, objective type based on (remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, creating)
(a) Remembering—How many--,Can you name--,What happened—
(b)Understanding-Can you clarify---, How would you explain---
(c)Applying-Do you know another incidence--, which factors would you change---
(d)Analyzing-What was the problem---, why did changes occur---
(d)Evaluating-What are the alternatives---, what are the pros and cons---
(e)Creating-Can you design----, can you develop---, Can you see a possible solution---
2. Observation-It is assessed to recognize and identify student’s personality, performance, interest, aptitudes.
*The errors and risks of being biased and subjective can be reduced by using an observation schedule.

3. TEST AND INVENTORIES
Oral test are best suited to assess the depth of learning where a student has difficulty in written examination.
4. Checklist-It is an instrument of data recording and documentation. It should be filled only by collecting the information by observing or questioning or by documentation.
5.Rating scale – It is used wherever a response or learner’s behavior is likely to be in continuum-from excellent to bad or from satisfactory to unsatisfactory
6. Anecdotal Records-It is the observed behavior of a student that sheds light on the conduct, thinking skills, and characteristics about his personality.
7. Document Analysis- Analysis is done with regard to assessment of students on the basis of documents like projects, assignments, journal etc.

8. Portfolio-It is the collection of evidences of student’s work over a period of time. It can include photographs, paintings, audio-video recordings, self assessment sheets, peer assessment sheets, parent assessment sheet.

9. Quizzes –It helps in building collaboration, knowledge and team work in group events.

10. Assignments-All assignments should be followed with analysis, discussion and reflection. The teachers should encourage students to go beyond the textbooks, to do the group work and improve creativity.

ROLE FOR TEACHERS
1. Teachers should see that new learning skills are based on what the student already knows and understands.
2. Teacher must know that each child ha unique approach to acquiring knowledge and it is a continuous process.
3. They should be encouraged to do different activities.
4. Teacher should revise the concepts again and again to help them understand them better.
5. Learning should take place in a holistic manner.

ASSESSMENT
It can be done on a daily or periodic basis. Teachers can adopt individual assessment, group assessment, self assessment and peer assessment to see the Child’s learning process.
*Be clear why are you assessing the student.
*Do not label or compare children
*Use variety of information to assess child’s learning process
*Collect information continuously and record the same.
*Do not make any negative statements.
* provide feedback in a clear language which will lead to positive action and help students to do better.

Assessing Co-Scholastic Areas • All teachers need to be involved.
• Reduce subjectivity
• Remove bias
• Provides a point of reference to all teachers
• Make all teachers involved and accountable
• Distribute workload amongst teachers
• Simplify work with regularly maintained record on computer.
The development o improved evaluation tools and their appropriate use is very important in assessment of students on a continuous basis.
Teaching should be in the conversational mode rather than in the mode of authoritarian monologue.
Teachers must note that there is a need in today’s world that education must promote and nourish as wide a range of capacities and skills in our children as possible.
